Black Plague Hand Sanitizer Spray Recipe

With the grocery store shelves being empty of hand sanitizer these days, I thought now would be a good time to share my home made Black Plague ☠️ hand sanitizer spray. I’ve been making this spray for a little over a year now and initially had the idea after my husband told me the history of Thieves oil and the Bubonic plague. Have you heard it? It’s a really interesting story that I will share with you.

Back in 1413, the bubonic plague was ravaging Europe and Asia for four years and killed an estimated 150 million people. The plague started off with severe flu symptoms, then continued with bacteria infecting the blood system and typically ended in death.

During this time, four thieves went around robbing sick and dying people, but surprisingly did not catch the highly contagious, deadly illness. These thieves were caught and jailed for robbing sick, vulnerable people. They were sentenced to be burned alive for their crimes, but the judge was intrigued that they did not catch the plague and told them he would spare them this punishment if they would share their secret.

The thieves said that they were perfume and spice merchants who were unemployed because of the closure of the sea ports and the utter devastation of the disease. They combined some of their essential oils (cloves, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary) and applied the blend to their hands, ears, temples, feet, and on a cloth that they stuffed into their long beak-looking mask that they wore over their mouths. This blend of oils that they wore protected them when they went out and robbing sickly people.

The judge shared their secret with everyone he knew and kept his word of not burning them alive. Instead he had them hanged.

These former spice merchants came up with a very wise blend of oils. The combination of these herbs and spices, especially when concentrated into an essential oil, contains amazing properties that are antimicrobial, anti-fungal, antiseptic, and antiviral! How incredible is that? Plus, the blend smells delicious too ... with warm and spicy notes.

Now that you know the story behind thieves oil, I will now share with you my hand sanitizer spray recipe.

Black Plague Hand Sanitizer Spray Recipe

  • 30 ml spray bottle (glass if you can)
  • 10 drops Thieves oil (or 2 drops each of cloves, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, & rosemary)
  • 60% isopropyl alcohol
  • Filtered water

  1. Pour thieves oil into bottle, then fill the bottle 2/3 of the way with isopropyl alcohol. Top the bottle off the rest of the way with filtered water. Close the bottle, give it a good shake, and it’s ready to use!
  2. Use it every time you are out in the public or need to sanitize your hands. Be careful not to rub your eyes after using this on your hands though as it will irritate them.
