Lovebug Potion #9

Frankincense Hyaluronic Acid 4 oz Serum

Finally our first beauty tonic. Anti-aging from the inside and out.

Hyaluronic acid, for example, is what makes babies skin look so dewy and plump. Our skin makes less of it over time, but we can apply it topically to provide intense hydration.

What is hyaluronic acid?

While collagen and elastin are the main proteins that provide structural support for our skin, hyaluronic acid is like a gel-cushion that holds in moisture. This naturally occurring polysaccharide has the ability to absorb up to 1,000 times its weight in water and when applied topically, it can help skin hold in moisture and feel more supple. (source) High molecular weight hyaluronic acid is also considered helpful for reducing inflammation and supporting tissue repair. (source 1, source 2)

Low Molecular Vs. High Molecular Weight

In the skincare world, low-molecular weight hyaluronic acid (LMW-HA) is often touted as superior because the smaller molecules are able to penetrate the skin's surface. It’s made by breaking high molecular weight hyaluronic acid into fragments using enzymes.

While it’s true that low molecular weight hyaluronic acid does penetrate skin, it’s also well-documented in clinical research that low-molecular weight hyaluronic acid is actually pro-inflammatory rather than anti-inflammatory. (source 1, source 2) Some doctors believe that while LMW-HA may make skin appear more supple at first, it’s due to inflammation rather than hydration, and may lead to accelerated aging. (source) It’s interesting to note that babies primarily make the high molecular weight form. (source)

In general, it’s agreed that if nothing else, high molecular weight hyaluronic acid is an amazing moisturizer. However, according to this study, full-size (high molecular weight) HA does actually penetrate skin.

Why is this so surprising? Two reasons. First, hyaluronic acid molecules are too big. They’re about 3,000 nm in diameter and the space between skin cells is only about 15 to 50 nm. Theoretically there’s no way a molecule that large should be able to make its way through the skin. Second, hyaluronic acid is very hydrophilic (or water loving) and we know that to penetrate skin, substances have to be more oleophilic (or oil loving). (source)

And yet, according to the above study, it does.

Our hyaluronic acid is considered to have a high molecular weight.

Squeeze a little bit of the serum into your hands – this is preferred because dipping your hands directly in the jar may reduce the shelf-life – then apply a thin layer in the morning and before bed to clean skin. If you use toner, put it on after the toner and before moisturizer. If you just got out of shower dry face well before applying.

Ingredients

Young Living Frankincense, MSM, Distilled (aloe vera) water, Witch hazel, GSE, and HA 1%

Frankincense

Frankincense essential oil is a powerful astringent that can be used to help reduce acne blemishes, the appearance of large pores and wrinkles. Frankincense is also one of the best essential oils for skin tightening to naturally slow signs of aging. According to a review published in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine, frankincense oil reduces redness and skin irritation, while also producing a more even skin tone. Studies suggest that it’s the pentacyclic triterpene (steroid-like) structure of frankincense oil that contributes to its soothing effect on irritated skin.

MSM

MSM is necessary for collagen production. Sagging skin and wrinkles, as well as dry, cracked skin are all developed through a loss of collagen. MSM can normalize collagen formation and radically improve skin health. Most MSM supplements contain synthetic byproducts, but you can find an organic, 100% naturally derived MSM right here with us.

MSM is a sulfur bearing amino acid and Keratin, present in the skin, hair, and nails, is particularly high in the amino acid cysteine, which is found in sulfur. It is the sulfur bond in keratin that gives it greater strength. According the University of Maryland, MSM helps form connective tissue in skin. WebMD states that MSM might help rosacea, noting that a cream containing MSM and silymarin seems to improve skin color and other symptoms of rosacea. Indeed, sulfur is widely used to treat acne and other skin disorders. MSM helps other active ingredients penetrate the skin. It is said that because MSM makes the cells more permeable, it thus enhances the absorption of nutrients.

Witch Hazel

Witch Hazel is known to cleanse the skin while tightening pores, reducing redness and inflammation and balancing the PH to help return your skin to an acidic state after washing with commercial alkaline soaps. Our Witch Hazel is top quality. It is a 14% alcohol concentration. The slightly acidic pH makes it beneficial for the skin as it does not significantly alter the skin's natural pH and gives it antibacterial properties.

GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract)

The best natural preservative there is. Extending shelf life to indefinite. Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, grapefruit seed extract applied topically can provide an array of anti-aging benefits like evening skin tone and fighting off free radicals. The effectiveness of grapefruit seed extract as a topical fungicide has been demonstrated in products to treat athlete’s foot and fungal infections of fingernails and toenails. The extract also is known to kill many strains of fungi, bacteria and parasites on the skin. Grapefruit seed extract also has disinfectant, antiviral and antiseptic properties.

HA (Hyaluronic Acid)

Intercellular Hyaluronic acid (HA); Skin aging is also associated with loss of skin moisture. The key molecule involved in skin moisture is hyaluronan or hyaluronic acid (HA) plays a vital role in the synthesis of extracellular matrix molecules and epidermal cell interaction with the surrounding environment.

Hyaluronic acid can be degraded by non-enzymatic reactions such as acidic and alkaline hydrolysis, ultrasonic disintegration, thermal decomposition, and degradation by oxidants. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17716848

We use pH balance, vegan antioxidant herbal infusion stabilizers made with temperature regulation to insure you with the perfect beauty solution, with quality so high you can even consume it. Our HA is produced via streptococcal fermentation and rooster combs as we are a vegan friendly company.
